Good Hunting

For years, an old gentleman living outside San Antonio invited his city doctor to visit his property and enjoy the wonderful hunting. After three vacation trips to the ranch, during which he hunted without ever seeing anything to kill, the tanned, healthy doctor said to his host: “Why do you keep saying the hunting is wonderful out here? How can it be good when I never find anything?”

The elderly rancher said to his doctor: “I said it’s the huntin’ that’s good, son, not the findin’.”

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. That rancher was speaking about life. We may set our sights on big goals, but life’s deep pleasure comes in the strategy, the sweat, and scenery along the way . . . in the high calling of our daily work.

What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God.
