Duty, Honor, Country

Heavy rains hammered the highway near an army base. Traffic was bumper-to-bumper. A monument near the highway honored those who died in the worst accident in the history of the 101st Airborne Division. Small flags stood in the ground, one next to each fallen soldier's plaque.
Just when traffic began to move, a soldier—a private—sprang from his car and ran toward the memorial. While horns honked, the soaking-wet private returned one small, overturned flag to its upright place. Then he stood at attention and saluted.
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. That single act of duty, honor, and country encapsulates what we all feel for the American military. That wet soldier embodies the high calling of our daily work.
Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
