Kind Gestures

After attending a funeral, Nancy and Kim went out to eat. It had been two years to the day since Kim's father died, and their mood was somber.
Then a former client of Nancy's entered the restaurant. He approached their table, said a warm hello and left to join friends. Later, when Nancy asked for the check, the waiter motioned across the room. "That gentleman already paid for your dinners."
Both women were caught off guard. Had their mood been so transparent? His kind gesture lifted their cloud.
This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Mother Teresa said that kind words can be short, but their echoes are endless. It's also true of kind gestures—their echoes are endless—it's the high calling of our daily work.
Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
