Gail was in her 40s when her mother died suddenly. The loss was a blow. Her father had died years before, and Gail had not married. She'd expected to enjoy her mother for many more years. Feeling truly alone, Gail sank into deep grief.

Then Gail's friends took action. One evening, they all met at her house bringing her favorite foods. They sat around her table, and one by one told Gail why her life mattered. They couldn't bring back her mother, but they could affirm that Gail's life was important in their lives.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. An Irish proverb says, "It is in the shelter of one another that people live." As long as we breathe, we can mean something to someone else—it's the high calling of our daily work.

We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
