Uprooted Tree

Transcript

Lyn visited the park only to see a large old cypress blown over by a storm that had just passed through. She ached as she approached the grand old tree, now lying partially submerged in the river. As she sat on the trunk for a moment, she reached down into the core of the tree. To her surprise, it was soft and decayed. The old tree, veteran of a thousand storms, had grown weak on the inside. Though to the casual observer, it was still majestic, inside the tree had slowly rotted.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Although we may present a grand exterior to the world, it's our inner core that matters most. Our inner life sustains and feeds us. Attend to the still, small voice. It's the high calling of our daily work.

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness."

(Matt 23:27-28)
