Wilma Rudolph

At the 1960 Olympics, Wilma Rudolph won the unofficial title of "the world's fastest woman." She was the first American woman to win three gold medals at the same games. Winning golds in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, along with another in the sprint relay, is astonishing. But that's only part of Wilma's amazing story.

As a young child, she was diagnosed with polio. The doctor said she would never again walk. But her mother was determined—as were her brothers and sisters. They massaged her legs daily. It took six years, but at age twelve, Wilma walked without a leg brace or crutch.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Behind Wilma Rudolph's triumph is the determination of a family driven by love—in the high calling of our daily work.

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
