Those quieter athletes don't often garner the attention of tabloid reporters or television crews, but they do renew our faith and earn our respect.
In a recent Wall Street Journal piece, Jason Gay reported on the looming retirement of Yankees relief pitcher Mariano Rivera. Gay noted that Rivera's defining characteristic (an unusual one for a pro athlete) was dignity.
