The Tutor

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

Sherry was a tutor, hired to review grammar with 10-year-old Bobby in the hospital burn unit. The unit shocked her, and the boy was hard to look at. But she stayed, taught verbs and adverbs, and the next day, she forced herself to return.

On her second visit, the nurses welcomed her back, "He's waiting for you!"

And Bobby perked up with each lesson and began to improve. Sherry finally asked, "Bobby, you were so depressed when I first came, what changed? I know you are still in a lot of pain."

"Well, I figured if I was gonna die, they wouldn't pay you to teach me verbs and adverbs."

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. She was a teacher; the subject was verbs and adverbs; but the lesson was hope. When she felt least effective, this teacher learned the high calling of our daily work.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

(Rom. 15:13)
