Failing Well

Video / Produced by The High Calling

When we look at the life of Jesus, we see again and again the importance of meekness. Christ could have been the Messiah the Jews expected; coming with a sword to free them from the Romans. He certainly had the strength to do it—but he didn't. Instead he saved all of us.

He has shown us that gentleness, patience, and grace can have a far more lasting effect than exercising power, even if we have it and feel justified in using it. Like Howard says, sometimes "what we don't say speaks best."

TRANSCRIPT: Bill's team did everything right ... and still lost the account. It wasn't fair.

Adding insult to injury, back at the office, Bill's boss let him have it. Bill almost gave it right back. But he kept his head. He took the rebuke, took responsibility, and went back to work. Later that day, the boss called again . . . with an apology and another project.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. James 1:19 urges us to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Ah ... words to live by. Angry outbursts—even when justified—rarely do any good. In hot moments, what we don't say speaks best ... in the high calling of our daily work.
