Hair Dryers and Eternal Significance

Finding significance in our work is something we spend a lot of time writing, thinking, and praying about here. It's something we're all trying to work out in our own lives, trying to discover the Kingdom in the roles and places we inhabit—and thank God that we do. The beauty of this community is being able to share our discoveries, and our struggles.

But once we have figured this out, and found some measure of significance in our work, do we stop there? Sometimes, yes. Resting in a new-found purpose can be healthy, even necessary. Great things happen, however, after we perceive our purpose, when we begin to pursue it.

As a manager for a company that makes hair dryers, Gary believed his organization had no eternal significance.

Then he thought. He thought about the jobs his company provided—everything from executives to warehouse laborers. The work enabled all of them to provide for their families.

But Gary wanted to make more of a difference. He persuaded the company's president to set aside some of the profits. They formed a foundation benefiting those who had lost their hair due to cancer.
