Each morning I prick my finger, squeeze out a drop of blood, and test it to see how much glucose is in my blood. I have been doing this every day since I was ten years old, when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. That little number on the screen decides almost my every move: how many carbs I eat, how much energy I exert, whether I give a shot of insulin or drink a juice box. I live a never-ending exhausting cycle that I have to follow just to stay alive and healthy.

I have wrestled with questions like, Why won’t God cure me? Why does God allow us to live with chronic pain and suffering? How can I take care of myself when I feel so burdened? How can I use my condition to see God at work in my life and those around me?

When I came to college, I began to pursue a degree in Community & Public Health Promotion with the hopes of positively impacting the lives of those living with chronic diseases. Through my vocation as a health educator, I hope to help others treat their bodies well because they are sacred. Beyond that, I hope to help people see that God uses struggles to reveal our need for and dependence on Him.
God has used my condition to reveal Himself to me, and I want to be a part of his redemption story by showing people their value and worth, regardless of how physically broken they are.
